Capturing Unbanked and Underbanked Customers

How many of your potential customers have no savings account (underbanked) or no bank accounts at all (unbanked)? Chances are, more than you might think. According to a 2011 survey conducted by the FDIC, the number of unbanked and underbanked households are on the rise.

In fact, the FDIC survey reveals that one of four U.S. households (28.3 percent) are either unbanked or underbanked. One in 12 households have no bank accounts whatsoever. That’s 821,000 more unbanked household than in 2009. Other notable survey findings tell us that:

  • 20.1 percent of U.S. households are underbanked — that’s one in five households
  • 29.3 percent of households don’t have savings accounts
  • 10 percent don’t have checking accounts
  • One-quarter of households have used alternative financial services such as check cashing or payday loans in the past year
  • 12 percent of households have used these services in the past 30 days
